David Nelson Hickey

David Nelson “Uncle Dave” Hickey, 71, of McArthur, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by family. He was born November 27, 1954, in Erie, Pennsylvania, son of the late Norman Andrew and Alene June Kimmy Hickey.

Dave was a 1973 graduate of Vinton County High School and dedicated much of his life to serving his community. He proudly served as the Sheriff of the Vinton County Sheriff's Office for 11 years before retiring. Prior to his time as Sheriff, he worked for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) in Vinton County and also served as a police officer with the McArthur Police Department. During his time as a law enforcement officer, Dave earned several different awards. Following his retirement from law enforcement, Dave spent eight years driving for Hopewell Transport. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida and Put-in-Bay, and treasured the time he spent with his family and friends. Dave never met a stranger, was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the people he served and loved.

He is survived by his son, Freddie (Sarah) Nesser; grandchildren, Liam and Kimber Nesser; special friends, Scott, Angie, Taylor, Maverick, Carolyn, Sheriff Ryan Cain, Shaylie, Jay, Joey, Jonathan, Lacie, Josh, Marie, Little Ryan, Jodi, Shayla and Chase and his beloved pets, Brutus and Isabelle.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Rev. Jerry Griffith Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 12 p.m. until the time of the service.
