Nov 17, 1929 — Jun 29, 2026

Logan

Dr. S. Louis Berta, 96, of Logan, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Pickering House, Lancaster. He was born on November 17, 1929, in LeRoy, Ohio, the son of the Hungarian immigrants Frank and Barbara (Nagy) Berta. He was married for 56 years to the late Elizabeth “Betty” (Meyer) Berta.

Lou was a consummate toastmaster, with a big laugh and a joke for almost any occasion. He believed that hard work was the sincerest form of prayer and was proud of his service as a scoutmaster, the founding president of the North Columbus Jaycees, and as a Rotarian in Columbus, and Logan. He was the first in his family to attend college, receiving an optometry degree from Ohio State University. Over the years, he practiced optometry in Chardon, Lima, Columbus, Athens and Marietta.

He loved family gatherings in the Hocking Hills, woodcarving, storytelling, Ohio State football, traveling in his motorhome and corresponding with cousins in Hungary.

He is survived by his sons, Tom Berta of LeRoy, Ohio, Steve (Lisa McVey-Berta) Berta of Carmel, Indiana, Mike (Lynn) Berta of Hocking County, and Dan (Debra) Berta of Ronald, Washington; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and companion, Bobbe Ray.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Barbara; wife, Betty; and daughter-in-law, Liz Smith Berta.

Family and friends may gather from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. Second St, Logan. Private interment will be in Shaw Cemetery, Logan.
