It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Gretchen M. (Ward) Karl, who departed this life peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by family and love.
Born in Athens, Ohio, on February 1, 1943, Gretchen was a woman of strength, grace, and quiet wisdom. A loving mother, sister, and friend, she touched the lives of many with her compassion, unwavering support, and generous spirit.
Gretchen was known for her sharp wit, warm heart, and deep sense of empathy that made everyone feel heard and cared for. She found beauty in life’s simple pleasures—whether tending to her garden, reading a good book or antiquing. Her quick mind and natural gift for trivia were enriched by a lifetime of experiences, growing up in a military family, living in and exploring places around the world. Gretchen loved animals, and throughout her life, she cared for countless pets, each one indulged and adored as a true member of the family. Her warmth, humor, and devotion to family were the heart of her life, and she was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.
She was a source of constant encouragement and unconditional love to her children and grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply. Her legacy will live on in the values she instilled: kindness, resilience, and the importance of family.
Gretchen is survived by her children: Erina Hoos and her husband Tony, Kerry Santacroce and her husband Bob, Jim Karl and his wife Lara, and Paul Karl; her brothers: Paul T. Ward and Barry Ward; 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul C. and Grace K. Ward; her sister, Suzanne Kathleen Ward; and her granddaughter, Grace Lena Karl.
A memorial service will be held at Elk Cemetery in McArthur, OH on Friday, August 15 at 1 pm, where friends and loved ones are welcome to gather and celebrate her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the SPCA in Gretchen’s honor.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her memory and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
