James "Jim" Harrison Runyon

James “Jim” Harrison Runyon, 67, of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio. He was born May 15, 1959, in Nelsonville, Ohio, son of Barbara Dearing Runyon of Nelsonville and the late Harrison Runyon. Jim was married to Teresa Ann Burley Runyon, who survives.

He was a devoted member of Little Tavie Church in Point Pleasant, West Virginia and loved his children and grandchildren beyond measure. Known for his fondness for Bob Evans in Athens, his Diet Mountain Dew, and the loyal companionship of his dog, Sully, he lived a life rooted in simple joys. An outdoorsman at heart, he spent many years as a self-employed logger and found peace in fishing and woodworking. He was also proud to give back to his community, serving as a former Little League basketball coach for the Nelsonville Greyhounds and as a former member of the Nelsonville City Council.

Along with his wife Teresa, Jim is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Benjamin) Carpenter of Morgantown, West Virginia, Kayla (Nicholas) Leppert of Athens; Nicholas (Samantha) Runyon of Salem, Virginia and Adam Runyon of Dublin; grandchildren, Maxx and Cole Leppert, Owen Runyon, James and Lucas Carpenter and Oliver Runyon and sister, Stephanie (Glenn) Chaffin of Nelsonville.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Nick and Della Runyon and maternal grandparents, Vaul and Emma Dearing.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, May 21, 2026, in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Elder Danny Prater officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of James Runyon to Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, Ohio 45764, to help with funeral expenses.
