Naomi Averill Barney

Naomi Averill Barney, 79, of Thornville, formerly of McArthur, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the Pickering House in Lancaster. She was born on August 12, 1946, the daughter of the late Clarence and Naomi (Martin) Irvin. She was the widow of the late Gary Andrew Barney.

Naomi was always full of love and laughter. She attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in McArthur and Oakthorpe Church in Thornville. She was a very adventurous person and loved to travel. Naomi also liked to relax at home, doing word searches, and reading and studying the Bible. Spending time with family was always her favorite thing to do. At the end of the day, she loved to put on some 50’s and 60’s music and dance the night away.

Naomi is survived by her sons, David “Gene” (Gina) Barney and Jeremy (Stephanie) Barney; daughter, Bobbie Jo (Doug) Neece; grandchildren, David Andrew (Sierra), Sammy Jo, Ashtyn, Nicole, Joey, Eta (Brian), Oscar, and Chris; great-grandchildren, Akiara, Lawrence, Levi, Brittany, Paige, Steven, Timmy, Nevin, and Gracie; great-great-granddaughter, Eden Paige; brother, Clarence Irvin Jr.; sister, Avalon Sue May; brother-in-law, Marvin Barney; sisters-in-law, Linda Hunt, Darlene (Bob) Morris, Debbie (Paul) Stewart, and Betty Barney; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Naomi; husband, Gary; grandson, Cody Neece; brothers-in-law, Marvin Hunt, Roger Barney, and Bill May; sister-in-law, Emma Irvin; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Carl Radcliff officiating. A family graveside service will take place at a later date. Family and friends may visit on Saturday, from 10 am until the time of the service.
