Roland S. Stedwill, age 92, departed peacefully while surrounded by family members on June 18, 2023, in Toledo, Ohio. Roland was born on November 28, 1930, to Lena Pearl (Bowers) and Edgar Frederick Stedwill in Carbon Hill, Ohio. He graduated from Ward Local High School in 1948 and continued his education at the University of Dayton and the Ohio University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Biology in 1955. Before graduation, Roland enlisted in the United States Army and was a member of the 223rd Infantry Regiment of the 30th Division Tank Company in Korea. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1953.
After employment as an assistant psychologist at the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster, Ohio, he attended Bowling Green State University and was awarded the Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology. Roland then served as a clinical psychologist for the Toledo Mental Health Center for more than 30 years where he and his team developed the innovative Serenity Hall Alcoholism Treatment Program. He served as the program’s director for 15 years.
Roland’s priority was his family. He came home for lunch every workday, spent vacations pulling the family camper behind a station wagon with a canoe on top, and spent many an hour in purposeful conversation with his loved ones. When he asked, “How are you?”, he wanted to know the answer. He enjoyed the hot summertime and being outside in his garden growing roses, zinnias, and tomatoes. Roland loved and trusted God. He prayed intentionally for each family member by name twice daily and recently read again through his entire Bible.
Roland is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Theresa (Terry) Stedwill, brother-in-law Burton (Joyce) Schwartz, children, Mary Rabai, Jeffery (Julie) Stedwill, and Lisa (Michael) Maurer, grandchildren Hadi, Nour, Stephen, Jacob, Amani, André, Jean-Luc, Cecily, Isaiah, John Paul, Genevieve, Francesca, Maria, Joshua, Nathan, Hannah, Isaac, Daniel, Joseph, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret (Stedwill) Hubble, son-in-law Bilal Rabai, granddaughter Mary Anne Maurer, and grandson Jeffery Rabai.
