Shirley Gail “Sis” Stone, 79, of Dundas, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026, at her residence. She was born October 12, 1946, in Pedro, Ohio, daughter of the late Perry Richard and Marjorie Louise Ross Brumfield Sr.
She graduated from McArthur High School in 1964 and from Holzer School of Nursing in 1967, beginning a dedicated career as a registered intensive care nurse. A faithful member of Dundas Church and former attendee of Cornelius Chapel Church in Creola, she was a strong Christian whose voice could often be heard joyfully singing hymns while she gardened or spent time outdoors. She was a proud member of the SERENO Chapter #128 OES in McArthur. Her love for serving others extended far beyond her community—she treasured her mission trips to the Dominican Republic and volunteered wherever she was needed, including many hours helping at the food pantry in Hamden. Known for her unselfish heart, she found great joy in delivering food to Amish families in the area and caring for others in quiet, meaningful ways throughout her life.
She is survived by her sister, Kathy Blake of Dundas; brothers, Perry Richard Brumfield Jr. of Hilliard and Bernie (Anita) Brumfield of Hickory, North Carolina; several nieces, nephews and special friends, including her beloved cats, Chester and Coonie.
In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by her significant other, Edwin “Smiley” Sowards.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2026, in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Doug Sheets officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 1 p.m. until the Eastern Star service that will begin at 2:45, prior to her service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2026, at Bradshaw Cemetery, 11858 County Road 5, Pedro, Ohio 45659.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Shirley Gail Stone to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
