Sylvia A. Hanning

Sylvia A. Hanning, 91, of Nelsonville, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Ohio Health Hospice House, Columbus. She was born on September 10, 1934, in Nelsonville, the daughter of the late Etta (Hall) and Jess Matheny. Sylvia was married to the late Joe Hanning for 29 years.

Sylvia worked at the Nelsonville Kroger for 36 years and 20 years with Souers Cardaras Funeral Home. She was a member of the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church.  Sylvia loved the Nelsonville Parade of the Hills. She enjoyed volunteering for the parade and she and her husband, Joe, hosted family and friends annually during the parade. She enjoyed baking and dearly loved her wiener dogs, especially Dusty.

Sylvia is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Etta and Jess; husband, Joe; sisters, sisters, Beatrice, Virginia, Eleanor, Getrude, and Charlotte; and brother, Jess.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the Souers Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St, Nelsonville, with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Family and friends may visit from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
