William "Bill" Ashley Smith

William “Bill” Ashley Smith, 82, of Lancaster, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026, at OhioHealth O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio. He was born August 29, 1943, in Washington, D.C., son of the late Parker Wiley and Angela Matilda Soares Smith. Bill was married to the late Rebecca Ann Windle Smith.

He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force before dedicating many years of his life to his work as a skilled carpenter, retiring after a career marked by hard work and craftsmanship. A former owner of Bill's Family Cycle in Nelsonville, he enjoyed connecting with friends and members of the community through his business. In his free time, he could often be found riding his beloved trike motorcycle, casting a line while fishing, pitching horseshoes, or spending an afternoon at the bowling alley. He also enjoyed relaxing at home while watching golf on television. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, adventurous spirit, and the many memories he created with family and friends through the activities he loved most.

Bill is survived by his sons, Gerald William (Debra) Smith of Lancaster and Scott Smith of Logan; stepdaughter, Terri Ross of Virginia; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, John Smith of Massachusetts and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Vickie Gray; sister, Elizabeth Lanoue and brothers, Eugene Smith and Dale Smith.

Bill’s wishes were to be cremated with a graveside service in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, held at a later date.
