Wilma Louise York

August 30, 1933 — June 14, 2025

Logan

Wilma Louise Johnson York went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at her home in Logan, Ohio.

Born in McComas, West Virginia in Mercer County on August 30th, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Johnson and Veda Winesette Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.P. York, as well as her sister, Margie Shrewsbury and brother, Bud Mason; brothers-in-law, Bill, Carl, Charley, and Roy York and sister-in-law, Geneva Benton.

She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandma, and Gigi. She is survived by four children, their spouses, and seven grandchildren - Rena Jo York Stubbs (Gregg), Kathleen Lynn York Yonter, Carl Perry York (Edie), and Stewart Kerry York (Kristen). Her grandchildren are Perry Michael and Brandon Dau, Carl Yonter (Emily), Chase and Carly York, and Kahlee and Quinn York.

Her surviving sisters in-law and brothers-in-law are Louise Middleton, Dorsey Karl (Ron), Bonnie Blanton, Betty Edwards, Jim York (Alicia), Richard York (Katrina), and Karen Holsten, as well as a great number of nieces and nephews.

She graduated from McComas High School in 1952, and in 1953 attended the School of Medical Technology in Welch, West Virginia. Once she earned her degree she worked in a number of clinics and hospitals. She started at the Stephens Clinic Hospital in Welch, West Virginia, and then on to the Richlands Clinic in Virginia. She ventured west, working in X-ray and in the medical lab for Dr. Glogur in California, and then back east to work for Dr. Welburn in Morganton, NC. She went on to work at Bluefield Hospital which is when she met C.P.

Wilma, like C.P., was typically hired on the spot when she applied for laboratory technician positions. Early in their married lives, C.P., while in the Army was stationed on Governor’s Island in NYC. When Wilma joined him in the Big Apple to set up their home, she was surprised to find out that C.P. had already found her a job in a hospital - as the head laboratory technician. His faith in her intelligence and work ethic was on display early on, and she excelled.

After C.P. got out of the Army, the couple moved back to Southeastern Ohio. In the 1960’s, Wilma worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg and then at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Wilma was an excellent cook, loved to sew, managed the affairs at home, and was a 4-H leader, while C.P. worked for the Ohio Department of Education.

Wilma picked up her medical technician career again once they moved to Logan. She worked at Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital in Nelsonville, and then on to Hocking Valley Hospital in Logan before retiring in the early 90’s.

She liked technology, enjoyed her iPhone, taking pictures, and could research anything on her iPad and figure out how things worked and how to get things done. The family always marveled at how sharp her mind was, although she was quick to downplay any compliment.

The York house always had dogs, mostly Brittany Spaniels, throughout the years. But later in life she enjoyed her cats and their company.

She was a dedicated wife, mother, and friend who lived out her Christian values by doing so much for those in need or for the less fortunate. She was a shining example of the feet and hands of Christ to those around her. She was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star, a Masonic-related fraternal organization, which aligned with C.P.’s Masonic/Masonry affiliation.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to the Scenic Hills Senior Center, 187 South Spring Street, Logan, Ohio, 43138.
